Smile your way to happiness

Current studies show that smiling has very positive benefits for our well-being. Even a fake smile or a smile when you are under stress can make you feel better. Smiling can trick your brain into feeling happy and in turn this induces physiological changes that lift your mood. So here at Your Mind At Ease we say “fake it till you make it”.

1. Smiling reduces stress.

A smile spurs a chemical reaction in the brain, releasing certain hormones including dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine increases our feelings of happiness while serotonin release is associated with reduced stress. So moments when you least feel like smiling might be the best time for it!

2. Smiling spreads joy, it is socially contagious.

Smiling at others inspires them to mimic your behaviour and smile back at you. Try it next time you pass a neighbour in the street. Happiness is like a virus which can spread from one person to another, lifting spirits and increasing good feeling.

3. Smiling increases likability.

Body language plays a huge role in how we respond to each other and your facial expression while talking is actually more important than the words you speak. Smiling immediately makes you more likeable and popular with other people.

4. Smiling builds relationships.

Smiling connects us with others. Our humanness interprets smiling as a gesture of trustworthiness and friendliness. Science tells us it makes us more approachable. Smiling is one of those simple things you can do to impact your quality of life and the lives of those around you.
