Give your partner space

Spending time apart from your partner doesn’t mean your relationship is in trouble. Quite the opposite. In a healthy relationship, each person takes care of themselves as well as each other. As tempted as we are to spend all our time with the one we love, it is important to keep cultivating the things that interest us outside the relationship. This actually keeps the relationship alive and nourished and makes us happier stronger people. So next time your partner needs a little space don’t panic. Just follow the tips below and remember that he or she is actually taking positive steps to keep themselves and relationship healthy. And you can also use the time to indulge in your own self care and do some of the things you love to do.

1. Understanding the Meaning of “I Need Time Alone”

When your partner says that he/she needs some time alone or needs space, this does not mean the end of the relationship. The message conveyed is not that he/she does not love you anymore. Everything needs air and space to grow and flourish and you have to know how to give someone space. Confined to a certain person or a situation and struggling with it is very difficult if proper space is not given at the right time. These words do not mean that you are rejected or abandoned.

2. Simple Tips on How to Give Someone Space

There are several ways by which you can give space to your partner and have your own personal interests.

  • As a couple, you go out together always. Make a small change. Split up and go out with your friends once in a while.

  • In a relationship it is not necessary that everything has to be done together. Each of them may have their own likes and dislikes. One might like badminton while the other would want to go swimming. Spending a little while apart from each other to your personal interest will help in creating space.

  • Let your partner take his solitary time when he/she is indulged in something like reading a book or working. Do not become a nosy person.

3. Do Not Stick to Your Partner When They Need Some Private Time

Sometimes you can feel that your partner is yearning for some space. The best way to make it easy for the relationship is to take it in the positive sense. When your partner makes the request for having some private time or gives signs of needing space, the right move is to withdraw. It is natural that you feel broken and down when your partner pulls back and keeps a distance. But realise that this is not the time to accuse, be repulsive or to cling on to the person.

4. Focus on Yourself when Your Partner Needs Space

You may have plans about you two and try to be together all the time. But, when your partner needs space, try to change your core attention to something you love to do. Go on a trip with friends, stay with family or spend time with children. There would have been some small things in life which were important to you before the relationship happened. This is your time to indulge in such things and divert your concentration.

5. Understand the Needs of Your Partner

When you face a certain emotional stress or situation in life, you would want your partner to understand it. In the same way, try to understand your partner and realise his/her need for space. Listen calmly to what the other person has to express. Try to ask the other person if there is any issue or matter that has to be talked about. This will make it easier for the partner.

The general rule is: respect your partner as well as yourself. Allow time for both of you to reflect on your feelings and needs so that you can better get along as one couple.

6. Love Yourself and Enjoy Self Indulgence

It is natural that when your partner requires some time away from you, you feel dejected. This is the time to understand that some things can be corrected with distance. Give your partner time to settle and take a break to think over the concerns in life. This is the best time to love yourself. It is natural to have the panicky feeling, but subdue your emotions. Meditation and other kinds of soothing exercises can help to curb the temptation to call up your partner or go berserk with emotions.
